Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Schärding / Passau
Stroll through the pretty little baroque town of Schärding and marvel at the famous Silberzeile lane, or take a walk through the "New Centre" of Passau, the town of three rivers, which has been completely redesigned as a pedestrian, car-free area.
Day 2
Schärding / Passau → Schlögener Schlinge (River Bend) ≈ 40–55 km
Cycle along the river Inn to Passau, the town of three rivers. Visit the cathedral with the largest church organ in the world (except Sundays and public holidays). Continue along the Danube past Obernzell to Engelhartszell (Austria's only Trappist monastery). Through the Donauleiten nature reserve, reach the Schlögener Schlinge — where granite forced the Danube into a dramatic 180° change of direction. Cross by ferry to your hotel.
Day 3
Schlögener Schlinge (River Bend) → Linz ≈ 55 km
Cycle through the green Eferdinger basin via the market towns of Aschach, Ottensheim and Wilhering to the Upper Austrian capital of Linz. The historic old town has many pubs and eateries to discover. Highlights include the magnificent views from the Pöstlingberg and a stroll along the Donaulände park.
Day 4
Linz → Grein / Surroundings ≈ 55 km
Take a detour from the Danube to St. Florian and its Augustinian monastery, then continue to Enns. Visit the town square with its 60-metre tower — the landmark of Austria's oldest town. Alternatively, visit the archaeological collection in the municipal museum Lauriacum. Return to the river and reach the baroque town of Grein, home to Austria's oldest still-operating municipal theatre, the maritime museum, and Greinburg Castle.
Day 5
Grein / Surroundings → Wachau ≈ 50–60 km
Cycle the Strudengau section — once feared by sailors, now a leisurely ride. In Maria Taferl, high above the Danube, discover the magnificent pilgrimage church that attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. Make a stop in Melk to admire the beautiful Stift Melk monastery overlooking the Danube.
Day 6
Wachau → Krems ≈ 40 km
Enter the picturesque Wachau region and enjoy the charming atmosphere of orchards and vineyards. Pass through the wine towns of Spitz and Weißenkirchen, cycle past the Dürnstein Castle ruin, and finish in the 1,000-year-old town of Krems. Today includes an organised wine tasting in the Wachau region.
Day 7
Krems → Vienna ≈ 80 km
A relaxed trip to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. Parts of the route can be covered by train. On arrival, treat yourself to a Viennese-style Americano coffee and Sachertorte in a typical coffee house, stroll along Mariahilfer Strasse, visit St. Stephen's Cathedral, or take a trip in one of the famous Fiaker cabs.
