Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Schärding / Passau
Stroll through the pretty little baroque town of Schärding and marvel at the famous Silberzeile lane, or take a walk through the "New Centre" of Passau, the town of three rivers, which has been completely redesigned as a pedestrian, car-free area.
Day 2
Schärding / Passau → Linz ≈ 95–110 km
Follow the river Inn to Passau where it joins the Danube, then cycle along the Danube towards Engelhartszell. Visit the abbey with its own liquor production. On your way to Linz you encounter the unique natural phenomenon — the Schlögener Schlinge (river bend), where the Danube has been forced to make a 180° turn. Once you reach Linz, enjoy the lively historic old town, the scenic views from the Pöstlingberg, or simply take a walk along the Danube.
Day 3
Linz → Melk / Surroundings ≈ 120 km
Leave Linz and cycle towards the Strudengau and Nibelungengau regions. Pass the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen, and just before the border between Upper and Lower Austria, discover the baroque town of Grein with Austria's oldest city theatre and Greinburg Castle. Continue your journey to Maria Taferl and Melk — stop briefly and look up to admire the beautiful Melk Abbey towering above the Danube.
Day 4
Melk / Surroundings → Vienna ≈ 125 km
Leave Melk and cycle into the landscape of the Wachau region, enchanted by the atmosphere of typical fruit orchards and vineyards. Today includes an organised wine tasting — a must-do in the Wachau. Refreshed, cycle past the wine towns of Spitz and Weißenkirchen as well as the ruins of Dürnstein Castle. During the final kilometres, ride via the 1,000-year-old town of Krems and the Roman town of Tulln to the Danube metropolis of Vienna.
