Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Schärding / Passau
Stroll through the pretty little baroque town of Schärding and marvel at the famous Silberzeile lane, or take a walk through the "New Centre" of Passau, the three rivers town, which has been completely redesigned as a pedestrian, car-free area.
Day 2
Schärding/Passau → Aschach/Brandstatt ≈ 70–80 km
You will cycle along the river Inn to the city of three rivers, Passau. Here, a short city tour or a visit to the cathedral with the largest church organ in the world is recommended. Then continue along the Danube via Obernzell to Engelhartszell, home to the only Trappist monastery in Austria. Cycle through the Donauleiten nature reserve and reach the Schlögener Schlinge (river bend) on its northern side, where the granite was too hard and the Danube had to make a 180° turn. A ferry ride takes you to the other side of the river.
Day 3
Aschach/Brandstatt → Ardagger/Grein ≈ 80 km
Today you cycle through the green Eferdinger Becken (basin) via Aschach, Ottensheim, and Wilhering to the Upper Austrian capital Linz. Following the motto "In Linz beginnt's" ("It starts in Linz"), begin your city tour in one of the many restaurants in the historic old town. Further highlights include the magnificent views from the Pöstlingberg. Later, continue towards Strudengau and Nibelungengau to Grein and its surroundings.
Day 4
Ardagger/Grein → Krems ≈ 85 km
From the baroque town of Grein, with the oldest city theatre in Austria, you will ride down the river. In Melk, stop to admire the beautiful Benedictine abbey towering above the Danube. Then cycle via the wine towns of Spitz and Weißenkirchen, past the ruins of Dürnstein Castle to your hotel in Krems. Today you will enjoy a wine tasting — a must during a visit to the Wachau region!
Day 5
Krems → Vienna ≈ 80 km
From the 1,000-year-old city of Krems, cycle via Traismauer and visit the Roman town of Tulln. Enjoy the tranquillity and culture of the rural area before arriving in Vienna. A cup of "Verlängerter" coffee and a piece of Sachertorte in one of the typical Viennese coffee houses awaits, or visit the main attractions by taking a ride with a famous "Fiaker" horse-drawn carriage.
