Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Schärding / Passau
Stroll through the pretty little baroque town of Schärding and marvel at the famous Silberzeile lane, or take a walk through the "New Centre" of Passau, the three rivers town, which has been completely redesigned as a pedestrian, car-free area.
Day 2
Schärding/Passau → Schlögen/Surroundings ≈ 40–55 km
Start your bike tour from Schärding by cycling along the river Inn to Passau, where the Inn joins the Danube. On the Danube cycle path you will cross the upper Danube valley and pass the town Engelhartszell with its impressive abbey church belonging to the Engelszell monastery. Then cycle via Niederranna to today's highlight, the "Schlögener Schlinge" (river bend). Here, the second largest river in Europe is forced by the granite of the Bohemian Massif into a unique 180° turn. A ferry ride takes you to the other side of the river.
Day 3
Schlögen/Surroundings → Enns/Surroundings ≈ 80 km
Ride through the green Eferdinger Becken (basin) via Aschach, Ottensheim, and Wilhering to the Upper Austrian capital Linz. Following the motto "In Linz beginnt's" ("It starts in Linz"), begin your city tour in one of the many restaurants in the historic old town. In Enns, visit the town square with the 60-metre-high town tower, the landmark of Austria's oldest town, or visit the archaeological collection in the Lauriacum town museum.
Day 4
Enns/Surroundings → Marbach/Surroundings ≈ 75 km
Cycle along the Danube and first reach the wonderful baroque town of Grein. Here you can visit Austria's oldest municipal theatre, which is still in operation, as well as the shipping museum or Greinburg Castle. You now leave Upper Austria and cycle into the Weinviertel to Marbach.
Day 5
Marbach/Surroundings → Traismauer/Surroundings ≈ 75–95 km
In Melk, stop briefly to look upwards — otherwise you might miss the beautiful Melk Abbey towering above the Danube. As soon as you have left the city behind, you will cycle into the landscape of the Wachau region, enchanted by the atmosphere of the typical fruit orchards and vineyards. Cycle via the wine towns of Spitz and Weißenkirchen, past the ruins of Dürnstein Castle and the 1,000-year-old town of Krems. Today you will enjoy a wine tasting — a must when visiting the Wachau!
Day 6
Traismauer/Surroundings → Vienna ≈ 65–85 km
The last kilometres of your bike journey take you to the Danube metropolis, Vienna. After arrival, immerse yourself in the city. Enjoy a cup of "Verlängerter" coffee and a piece of famous Sachertorte in one of the typical Viennese coffee houses. Stroll through Mariahilfer Straße, visit St. Stephen's Cathedral, or see the main attractions by taking a ride with one of the famous "Fiaker" horse-drawn carriages.
