Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Linz
The capital of Upper Austria welcomes you. Take a leisurely stroll through the amazing historic centre, watch the animals in Linz Zoo, or visit one of the exciting museums — for instance the Ars Electronica Center, the "Museum for the Future", where you get to experiment, research and test. Rental bikes (if booked) are ready for you in the hotel.
Day 2
Linz → Enns / Surroundings ≈ 25 km
Fire-spitting dragons, gnomes and witches are all still to be found in the Grottenbahn on Mount Pöstlingberg! Plan a visit before embarking on your cycling tour. Leisurely cycle out of the city along the river Danube, past the local recreation area Lake Pleschinger See with playgrounds and a bathing place. Lake Ausee is a great opportunity for a break — the Aqua Park with slides, climbing towers and slip-and-slide areas cranks up the fun. Then onwards to Enns.
Day 3
Enns / Surroundings → Grein / Surroundings ≈ 40–45 km
In Austria's oldest town, visit the Roman Circular Path, enjoy a waterpark featuring a 65-metre-long slide, or stroll through the castle grounds. Return to the Danube riverbank and continue along the wonderfully flat cycle path across the idyllic Machland scenery. En route to Grein, the next highlight awaits: the outdoor museum Celtic Village in Mitterkirchen — experience Austria's prehistory during a walk through the village.
Day 4
Grein / Surroundings → Marbach ≈ 35–40 km
Grein, the "Pearl of the Strudengau", was the final secure docking point for ships before the dangerous eddies. This history has made Grein the enchanting town it is today — which also offers a climbing gym and public outdoor swimming pool. From here the Danube valley narrows, displaying the fascinating spots of the Strudengau region all the way to Marbach.
Day 5
Marbach → Wachau ≈ 15 km
Enjoy a brilliant breakfast and then relax at the Nibelungenbad pool in Marbach. From Maria Taferl the view onto the blue Danube is particularly stunning. Today you cycle only a few kilometres until you reach the Wachau region. As colourful as the surroundings are, so diverse are the delicious regional products — apricots, apples, and wonderful cuisine at great value for the whole family!
Day 6
Wachau → Krems ≈ 40 km
Melk — the gateway to the Wachau! A visit to the monumental Benedictine monastery is almost a must. Then your tour continues as the whim takes you: take a fun boat trip to Krems, disembark earlier in Spitz or Dürnstein and cycle the final kilometres, or cycle the entire route. Either way, varied scenery, lovingly laid-out vineyards and vast plains await you!
Day 7
Krems → Vienna ≈ 35 km + train ride
During the first few kilometres you enjoy a leisurely train journey to Tulln, from where you start your final cycling stage to Vienna. The feeling is simply overwhelming when you cycle the final kilometres across the Danube Island into Austria's capital. A visit to the Prater — with its haunted house, wax museum, and the world-famous Ferris wheel — awaits the entire family. Also enjoy a stroll along Mariahilfer Straße and some time at the Schönbrunn Zoo.
