The blue waters of the Danube flow calmly and leisurely towards the Black Sea. The river makes its way between steep wooded slopes and green meadows. Be inspired by this idyllic atmosphere and cycle from Passau (optionally from Schärding) to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. The short daily stages give you even more time to enjoy the natural beauty of the Danube valley to the full.

Ride along the banks of the river on wonderful cycle paths and admire the breathtaking Schlögener Schlinge or the romantic landscapes on both sides of the Danube. Experience it all as extensively as you like. From the saddle of your bike, or during a pleasant break. During these you can also indulge in the culinary delights of this tour. Whether it's traditional country cuisine or tangy wine and quaffable cider from the Wachau, there's something for everyone with this variety of tasty specialities. From start to finish, this cycle tour is pure enjoyment and relaxation!

Our slow-paced tours are easy cycle tours that are suitable for absolutely everyone. The 35 to 55 km long stages can also be completed by less experienced cyclists and even kids, and the almost exclusively flat route is a big plus. On day 11, we have organised a special experience for you: “Legendary around Kreuzenstein Castle” leads along 13 stations through a wine-growing area that tells the legends of the region.

You can choose to start the tour in Passau or Schärding. In the Bavarian city on the three rivers, you should explore the charming old town and take a look at the cathedral organ — it is the largest church organ in the world. After only two stages you will reach Linz, where you can enjoy the great view of the city from the Pöstlingberg. Here art meets industry and traditional architecture meets modernity.

Maria Taferl, Melk, Engelhartszell, St. Florian — you pass numerous places of worship along the way whose interesting history is captivating. After the urban jewels of Enns and Grein, the Wachau awaits, where wine-growing areas alternate with charming villages. These are waiting to be explored on the rest day. After Krems and Tulln, you reach Vienna on day 9, the final highlight of this great tour.

Highlights of the Danube Cycle Path tour:
  • The colourful market square in Schärding: The baroque town in the Innviertel shimmers in all colours, the houses owe their paint according to colour of the original trades. Take advantage of the time for a stroll through the castle park and to the orangery before ending the evening in one of the inns.
  • The Schlögener Schlinge natural spectacle is best observed from above. If you still feel like taking a walk after the tour, you should make your way to the “Schlögener Blick” viewpoint. Once at the top, the view is breathtaking!
  • Juicy apricots in the Wachau World Heritage Site: Whether dumplings, liqueur or jam — the apricot is omnipresent here and is perfect as a souvenir for those at home in various varieties. The diverse soils and the special climate make this piece of earth a first-class growing region, incidentally also for wines!
  • The Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel: Not only children will enjoy a trip to the Vienna Prater, the city's amusement area. Ferris wheel, rides and the famous Swiss House promise fun and action.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Schärding / Passau
Stroll through the pretty little baroque town of Schärding and marvel at the famous Silberzeile lane, or take a walk through the "New Centre" of Passau — the town of three rivers, which has been completely redesigned as a pedestrian, car-free area.
Day 2
Schärding / Passau → Schlögener Schlinge ≈ 30–55 km
Cycle from Schärding along the Inn to Passau, then follow the Danube through the upper valley via Engelhartszell and its impressive abbey church. Experience the dramatic 180° river bend — the Schlögener Schlinge — and cross by ferry to your hotel.
Day 3
Schlögener Schlinge → Linz ≈ 45–55 km
Cycle through the green Eferdinger basin via Aschach, Ottensheim and Wilhering to the Upper Austrian capital Linz. Enjoy the historic old town, the magnificent views from the Pöstlingberg, or stroll along the Danube.
Day 4
Linz → Wallsee / Ardagger ≈ 50–65 km
Detour to St. Florian (Augustinian monastery) and continue to Enns. Visit the town square with its 60-metre city tower — the landmark of Austria's oldest city — before continuing to today's destination.
Day 5
Wallsee / Ardagger → Marbach / Maria Taferl ≈ 40–50 km
Cycle along the Danube to the beautiful baroque town of Grein with its oldest still-performing city theatre in Austria. Visit the maritime museum or Greinburg Castle. From Maria Taferl, enjoy a wonderful view of the Danube.
Day 6
Marbach / Maria Taferl → Wachau ≈ 35–55 km
Pass Melk Abbey towering above the Danube and cycle into the Wachau landscape of fruit orchards and vineyards. Today includes an organised wine tasting — a must-do in the Wachau region!
Day 7
Rest Day — Vineyard Tour in the Wachau
Relax with a walk through the wine villages of Spitz, Weißenkirchen and/or Dürnstein. Get to know the beauty and hospitality of the Wachau at your own pace.
Day 8
Wachau → Tulln ≈ 45–65 km
Cycle past the 1,000-year-old city of Krems to the Roman town of Tulln. Enjoy the tranquillity and culture (e.g. the Egon Schiele museum) of the rural area before reaching Vienna.
Day 9
Tulln → Vienna ≈ 35 km
A relaxed ride into the Danube metropolis, Vienna. Check in and enjoy the original Viennese wine tavern atmosphere with fine wines from their own vineyards to round off your cycling day.
Day 10
Vienna — Sightseeing Day
A day in Vienna offers many opportunities: explore the city's attractions by bike via the well-developed cycle path network. Ride via the Danube Island to the "Copa Cagrana" and beach bars for cocktails on the sandy shore.
Day 11
Vienna — "Legends Around Castle Kreuzenstein" ≈ 35–55 km
Explore a wine region north of Vienna. At 13 stations, the most beautiful legends of the region are told. A stop at a wine tavern completes the cycling day with real Viennese charm.
